How Whole Foods Market runs its employee app on one Vue.js codebase, with no iOS or Android developers

Whole Foods Market converted its Vue.js web app into a native employee app for a 91,000+ person workforce, and kept it compliant through Amazon's acquisition.

Whole Foods Market built Innerview, its employee app for more than 91,000 team members, on the Vue.js web app its front-end team already maintained. Median turned it into native iOS and Android apps, and has maintained the native layer since, including through security and compliance updates following Amazon’s acquisition.

Getting schedules and updates to a frontline workforce

Whole Foods Market store associates don't sit at desks. Shift schedules change, availability changes, and company news has to reach people who spend their day out on the store floor. Whole Foods wanted one place where team members could see their schedule, get notified of changes, and stay up to date on company communications.

Whole Foods had two options. They could hire iOS and Android developers and build two native apps from scratch, then maintain both alongside the web app for as long as the app existed. Or they could convert the Vue.js web app their front-end team already ran into an iOS and Android app.

Innerview runs on the same Vue.js codebase as the web app, and the front-end team ships updates to both at once. Median maintains the native iOS and Android layer, including the security changes the app needed after Amazon’s acquisition.

Median added two native features the website couldn't offer on its own:

Push notifications send real-time scheduling alerts and company-wide announcements straight to team members' phones.
QR code scanning lets team members scan a printed poster or brochure in the store and land on the matching page in the app.

Keeping Innerview compliant through Amazon's acquisition

When Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market, the app had to meet a new set of security and compliance requirements. Median worked with Whole Foods' engineering and security teams to update the app, without the front-end team taking on native development.

That work is an example of how Median supports enterprise clients after launch. Median's solutions team works directly with a client's developers and security team on requirements such as biometric login and identity providers (including Microsoft Entra and Auth0), and checks in to keep the app aligned with the company's roadmap.

Employee apps on SharePoint, Salesforce, and other enterprise platforms

Median turns enterprise platforms such as SharePoint and Salesforce into native apps without a rebuild, and works with whatever technology a company already uses.

The app uses the sign-in your website/web app already has, and supports enterprise identity providers such as Microsoft Entra and Auth0, so employees don't need another set of credentials. McKesson did it with its SharePoint intranet and rolled the app out to 19,000+ employees in its pilot.

Most enterprise projects go from onboarding to the app stores in two to four weeks, and enterprise teams can start with a two-week proof of concept to test key workflows first.
